Dry needling vs acupuncture?

You’ve probably heard of the health benefits of acupuncture and how it can help to alleviate a variety of conditions, but you may not have heard about dry needling. Just like acupuncture in Bexley or Ramsgate it too utilises a series of fine needles, but that is where the similarities end and the two processes remain different in many ways. Let’s take a closer look…

Dry needle therapy vs acupuncture

Firstly, acupuncture is rooted in Chinese medicine where it is believed that flow or energy lines known as Qi (pronounced chi) play a significant part in how the body functions and repairs itself. The idea behind acupuncture is that fine needles are inserted along those energy lines. As they are placed into certain positions and gently adjusted using finger pressure, they balance and restore energy (known as achieving homeostasis). Once a homeostatic balance is achieved, it enables healing chemicals to be stimulated, thus aiding recovery and rehabilitation. During a 15-30 minute relaxing procedure, the fine needles are left in the skin and it’s often used to help alleviate a wide variety of internal issues including chronic pain, insomnia, stress, and even digestive problems.

Dry needling, on the other hand, is rooted in western medicine and follows recommended trigger point locations throughout the body. While acupuncture techniques are thousands of years old, dry needling was developed in the 80’s and involves inserting fine needles into tender bands of muscle located inside larger muscle groups. The idea is that when the needles are inserted, they initiate a response (namely the release of a trigger point) which alleviates pain and restores muscle function. As such, dry needling is primarily used on muscular or nerve-related problems thus speeding up a patient’s return to full fitness.

So why needles?

There are times when massage techniques can’t always access the deeper layer of muscles. A fine needle, on the other hand can, and with dry needling in Bexley, experts can be more precise, targeting exactly where they need to.
